They began in the cinema as assistants to poet and director Armand Gatti; after directing several documentaries, they move on to fiction. It is with their third film, The Promise (1996), that they find true critical and public recognition.

Ever since, they�ll have one success after another: Rosetta, presented in Competition, crowned with the Palme d'or and Award for Best Actress at the Festival de Cannes in 1999; The Son, which gives Olivier Gourmet the Award for Best Actor in 2002.

As Francis Coppola, Emir Kusturica, Billie August and Shohei Imamura before, they won a second Palme d'or in 2005 for The Child. In 2008, Lorna's Silence is awarded Best Screenplay.

They always start off with reality. �We speak with people. This provides our story with a great deal of material. We talk together about what we've read, seen and heard. Things gradually come together. We cannot accept an element which has no material necessity."

Following Martin Scorcese, Quentin Tarantino, Nanni Moretti and Wong Kar-Wai, they will talk with Michel Ciment about their unusual career, their work at filming and writing together, the meaning that they give to their creation.

They will welcome festival-goers, film buffs and journalists Tuesday, May 19th, at the Bu�uel theatre, 2:30 pm.

The Festival de Cannes has celebrated the cinema for more than 60 years.
